So why did Ferrari decide to build a front engined supercar when their history has been based on mid engined masterpieces? Simple, this tin top turns into a cabriolet at the touch of a button, so they need the boot space to store the roof.
The California uses the same engine as the F430, although there have been a few tweaks to the bore and the stroke to accommodate for the extra weight of the roof mechanism and although the California weighs 300kg more than the F430 and produces 30 bhp less it still manages to match it’s sibling when accelerating from a standing start to sixty miles per hour in an impressive 4 seconds. The top speed also provides evidence that this is certainly no slouch coming in at a majestic 193 mph.
Cosmetically the California has stunning good looks and you will soon find out there is no better place to be than in the luxuriously upholstered cockpit of this fabulous piece of Italian engineering. Press the engine start button on the beautifully crafted steering wheel and the V8 rumbles, but as you click through the seven-speed twin clutch the California screams as it approaches the 8,000 rpm red line. The California may be a first for Ferrari, but first of all it definitely is a Ferrari.
